'Rogue One' ranks 1st at 2016 US box office

Disney’s latest sci-fi film ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ has ranked as the highest-grossing film released in the United States in 2016.

Lucasfilm’s ‘Star Wars’ drew USD498.9 million in US domestic sales for 2016 to rank as the highest grossing domestic film of last year.

The eighth installment of the Star Wars franchise overtook the USD486.3 million set by Disney Pixar’s ‘Finding Dory’.

Other high-grossing films released in 2016 include ‘Captain America: Civil War’ with USD1.153 billion, ‘Finding Dory’ with USD1.027 billion, ‘Zootopia’ with USD1.023 and ‘Rogue One’ with USD979 million.

‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ tells the story of a woman in search of schematics to an evil empire’s superweapon, the Death Star, so it can be destroyed.

The sci-fi flick stars actors Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn and Forest Whitaker, among others.

 ‘Rogue One’ premiered for a limited audience in Los Angeles on December 10, 2016, with a full domestic release on December 16, 2016.

‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’, the previous film in the ‘Star Wars’ series, was the highest-grossing film in 2015, raking in a global total of over $2 billion.
